Summary

When you hear her story, will you believe her?

Rose Marlowe is a hard-working nurse, a loving wife, and a merciless killer。 Or so she says。 Despite her confession, it is hard to believe that this beautiful, kind woman could have killed her vulnerable patient in cold blood。

Down-on-his luck author and ex-journalist, Theo Hazel, is convinced that there’s more to what happened than Rose is telling, and so decides to visit her behind bars to write her story。 His first surprise comes when Rose reveals that the victim was not a stranger to her。

As time goes on, it seems that Rose is letting Theo see behind her perfect mask。 With each new visit, he learns terrible new things about her heart-breaking past。 With each new visit, he becomes more and more convinced that she can’t be a killer。 But is he trying to free an innocent victim, or falling prey to a calculating murderer?

A gripping and unputdownable thriller that will keep you guessing into the early hours of the morning。 Perfect for fans of The Silent Patient, Shari Lapena and JP Delaney。

I loved getting stuck into this, I could just tell it was going to be gripping and emotionally devastating and I was not to be disappointed。 We are introduced to Rose, newly imprisoned for murder and then we have Theo, a struggling author who cannot let go of Rose's story。 They meet and Theo becomes determined to uncover the truth Rose is desperately trying to conceal。 I was completely immersed in this book, the present day chapters are enthralling and then we have flashback chapters as Rose begins to reveal the truth, these are sinister and left me wanting more。 Corrigan ensures there are twists throughout this read, right up until the final page。 I would say a lot of them are obvious but that is because Corrigan lies a path of seeds for the reader to follow and I enjoyed joining up the clues to reveal the truth underneath them。 Rose and Theo are two very compelling characters and it was easy to connect to them and want to follow their story as they becomes increasingly immersed in each other's lives。 All the characters in this book are integral to the plot and have something to reveal, I loved getting to know all of them and discovering their connected secrets。 'The Nurse' is a very readable and enjoyable thriller。 I loved discovering the secrets Rose is hiding。 Will you believe her? Of course there is a reason for everything and I was glued to the pages to find out the why and if Rose really was a part of this。I really enjoyed the characters in this story。 Rose is such a complex character with a harrowing past and I was torn and conflicted about my feelings towards her as the story progressed。 Theo was a standout for me and I thought he made the book as great as it is。My first book from J。A。 Corrigan and it will most definitely not be my last。 She knows how to keep the reader engaged and wanting to keep flicking those pages, which resulted in another stay up all night read! The idea for this story I found to be fresh, its execution first class and its characterisation second to none。The Nurse is dark, compelling, compulsive, twisty and will have you addicted from beginning to end as you race to see how it all will unfold。 Let me tell you, I was not disappointed and you won’t be either。 If you are a fan of psychological thrillers then you really need to add The Nurse as a must read for 2021。Thank you to J。A。 Corrigan, Canelo and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Nurse, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily。 。。。more

The Nurse is a compulsive and deeply enthralling psychological thriller with an exhilarating mystery at its heart and one man who stakes his journalistic reputation on his gut feeling about a stranger and convicted murderer。 The prologue opens in May 2015 at Queen’s Hospital in Derbyshire where a young man lies - he can breathe and hear but cannot move, open his eyes or speak。 He's been brought out of an induced coma and moved from intensive care and is now in the hospital’s high dependency unit The Nurse is a compulsive and deeply enthralling psychological thriller with an exhilarating mystery at its heart and one man who stakes his journalistic reputation on his gut feeling about a stranger and convicted murderer。 The prologue opens in May 2015 at Queen’s Hospital in Derbyshire where a young man lies - he can breathe and hear but cannot move, open his eyes or speak。 He's been brought out of an induced coma and moved from intensive care and is now in the hospital’s high dependency unit。 He recognises the nurse by her scent: sweet cinnamon and he associates that smell with the friendly nurse who often chats to him。 But this time is different。 The person doesn't speak knowing that he cannot be sure who they are until they do。 His consciousness begins to slip and a voice speaks the words: ”I'm sorry”。 Images begin to flash before him - he sees his wife, her already burgeoning belly taut, the dark skin of her face translucent with happiness, and as his life ebbs away, he acknowledges that his efforts to find the truth have all been in vain。 And then he is gone。 Fast forward to December 2015 and Rose Marlowe, a former nurse at the city’s hospital who had once looked after those patients in need of the most care part-time for over 4 years alongside her consultant anaesthetist other half, is on trial。 Despite having been nothing but a caring, compassionate and empathetic nurse, wife and mother, Rose has admitted she murdered Abe Duncan but has given no reason as to why and when she eventually does who knows whether her word can be trusted or not。 The judge sums up the crime: its premeditation, its callousness, the admission of guilt and the hurt caused to Abe’s family before sentencing Rose to 20 years in prison。 The narrative then jumps forward to March 2016。 Rose has been in prison for 3 months when she receives a letter in the post; it's from Theo Hazel, a novelist and nonfiction writer who is very much interested in telling Rose’s story。 He's a broken man with a marriage to his university sweetheart, Sophie, that has ended in divorce, a deceased teenage son, Elliot, and ever-worsening financial issues。 He manages to nab an advance and a book deal after using his power of persuasion and begins visiting Rose regularly。 He initially wants to get to know her and to gain her trust so she will feel at ease opening up for the first time about the ordeal and has the same questions as everyone else。 Did she genuinely carry this out and if so what inspired her to murder? If she is such a cold-blooded killer then why would her husband choose to stand by her despite the public abuse he received for doing so? Is what she's telling Theo the truth? Is Rose an angel of mercy, or angel of death? Far from the standard, run of the mill thriller, Corrigan has penned a riveting medical-based mystery that grips you like a vice from the get-go。 The Nurse is at once twisty, dark and suspenseful, but also genuinely heartbreaking。 You will wonder how Rose, an intelligent and compelling woman, came to be where she is, and as she reveals her secrets layer by precious layer, you will finally understand。 A clever, deftly woven, character-driven debut featuring a thought-provoking unreliable narrator。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I love the opening line to the blurb: When you hear her story will you believe her? From the outset, I was on my guard, not knowing who to trust。 Should I be rooting for a woman – a nurse, no less – who has purposely killed someone in her care? But then, as Rose tells her story to Theo, those dramatic headlines fade into the background as she tells her story in her own words。 Suddenly, it becomes very easy to see her as a victim too。 But of whom? And, throughout I still felt I was being led down I love the opening line to the blurb: When you hear her story will you believe her? And, throughout I still felt I was being led down one blind alley after another … until the ending pulled the rug out from underneath me。 Wow!So, what’s it all about?Rose is in prison, convicted of murder, a charge she neither denies nor defends。Theo is a writer who desperately needs a good hook to convince his publisher he has another book in him。 Rose’s story, he hopes, will be enough to secure him a new deal。Told from dual viewpoints and timelines, it pays to take note of the date as you start a new chapter。To be honest, it did seem a bit far-fetched that Rose would tell him her story, especially when she had so little to say in court。 It made me think whether she’d be telling him the truth or just a version thereof。 Even Theo had to admit she was holding something back, but nonetheless her story was fascinating。 How she went from having a real desire to do well in med school and become a paediatrician, to pulling out of her course to instead have a child with Daniel, with whom she had fallen in love。 Well, OK, life happens and plans change … but things changed again – significantly, drastically, unimaginably – when she went into labour。Rose’s story was a rollercoaster of highs and lows as twists and turns came from every angle; my impression of her and other key characters spun on a sixpence many a time (apart from Ed, I never liked him at all!) leaving me unsure as to whom I could believe。 My one reliable source was Theo; as he got to know Rose better he grew ever more certain that she hadn’t killed anyone。 Although, he was clearly smitten with her too which begged the question whether Rose was playing him too。Rose’s character was complex yet endearing。 All along it felt as though she had a true vocation for the medical profession, and that even from a prison cell she was protective of others。 She allowed Theo permission to speak to her mother and closest friends rather than have it appear that she was hiding anything。 And to maintain a sense of balance he spoke to the victim’s family too。 Eventually, pieces of the puzzle came together to allow the reader to better understand why Rose did what she did … or to at least think you understand her ;) Whilst I felt the final twist was well delivered, my overall impression was that this was more a slow-burning thriller with many layers。 Some layers you add, others you remove。 A most intriguing read and, at times, heart-breakingly sad。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Some very well-developed characters including Rose Marlowe and Theo Hazel。 Some others were less well-defined, particularly Ed Madden, Miles and Abigail, with Daniel Deane and Rose’s mum Marion somewhere in the middle。I liked Theo much better than Rose, I have to admit。 In fact there is nothing about him to dislike。 He has experienced sadness and unbelievable heartache, but he is kind, empathic and measured in his responses。 Except where Rose is concerned。 Then he is I really enjoyed this book。 Some very well-developed characters including Rose Marlowe and Theo Hazel。 Some others were less well-defined, particularly Ed Madden, Miles and Abigail, with Daniel Deane and Rose’s mum Marion somewhere in the middle。I liked Theo much better than Rose, I have to admit。 In fact there is nothing about him to dislike。 He has experienced sadness and unbelievable heartache, but he is kind, empathic and measured in his responses。 Except where Rose is concerned。 Then he is overcome by his growing feelings of love, in spite of her being a ruthless killer。 He says he feels like those women who write to death row prisoners and then claim to be madly in love with them when they haven’t even met。Rose, on the other hand, is a complicated protagonist。 She is serving twenty years in prison for murdering one of the patients in her care。 You want to like her if you don’t think she did it – or maybe you want to hate her if you think she is guilty – but there is always something niggling away, something not quite right。At first Rose doesn’t want to meet with Theo。 Then she changes her mind and starts to tell him her life story – the story she doesn’t even tell her prison therapist Don。 In fact Don seems pretty useless。 Maybe the prison is saving money by employing someone cheap。 Theo used to be a journalist, then a writer of fiction and non-fiction and initially he wants to write a true-crime story about Rose and the victim, a young man called Abe。 The publisher will want the salacious details, but Theo soon realises that he doesn’t want to exploit Rose。 So he listens。 He is a good listener。As for Rose, what is she hiding? What is she not saying? What didn’t come out in court was about her relationship with an older man in 1991 when she was a year four med student。 Daniel Deane was a doctor, but working as the CEO of Bluefields private hospital。 Rose was very naive and couldn’t see the hold he had over her and how he was manipulating her。There were some things I worked out before the end (I’m not saying any more) and some that I definitely didn’t (Ed and Abigail)。 But this is Rose and Theo’s story。 Rose killed her patient and Theo wants to know why or if she really did it。 Everyone else is just a spectator or is there more to it? Well it wouldn’t be the great story it is if there wasn’t。Many thanks to @damppebbles for inviting me to be part of #damppebblesblogtours 。。。more

The cover stopped me in my tracks, but the blurb made sure I stayed for the ride!It is a story that whispered to me…it promised the darkness and a mystery to solve and with a convicted nurse thrown into the mix。 Once upon a time I trained to be a nurse, so this really felt nostalgic, to a point。 There is nothing regular about this story。 The opening chapter impacts like a heart attack and the shockwaves are felt through-out the story。 Rose, a nurse, is on trial for the murder of Abe, she admits her guilt and consequently receives a sentence of twenty years。 A nurse is meant to be an individual with a caring disposition, its their vocation, their calling。 Just what could push them to committing the murder of one of their patients? I loved the tone; it disrupts the status quo。 The plot hit the ground running。 I didn’t have time or space to breathe let alone question too deeply…but question is what the reader must do。 A man in the gallery of the court is intrigued by her story…can he get to the bottom of it? Will Rose let him?Theo Hazel is a bit of a broken man。 His marriage has ended in divorce, he lost his teenage son, and his finances are in ruins。 One more month and the bank will be foreclosing on his house。 He has one last chance – writing a book about Rose and her supposed victim, Abe。 He’s convinced his editor will love it and might just be his next big payday。 She’s initially dead set against meeting with him but a chance meeting with a girl named Bella and it spins her world straight out of its orbit。 Be prepared, intrigue, mystery, heartache and dysfunctional families play a central role。Corrigan has created multiple layers that form a complex plot。 The Nurse had an intelligent narrative and a mystery that would not quit。 I was surprised the sheer force of the writing and the themes tackled with tact and understanding。 It had quite the impact on me。 The author has the unique skill of making sure I was never quite sure about anything。The Nurse was a twisty tale of betrayal and dysfunctionality。 I felt everything and I was immediately swept up into the story。 Dark and intense。 。。。more

A seriously dark tale which is strangely compelling and definitely unsettling。 Rose is working as a nurse but had previously been studying to be a doctor and she had been passionate about becoming a paediatric doctor。 Her dreams were seemingly derailed by a passionate love affair and becoming pregnant by the enigmatic Daniel。 Rose is now in prison but it is really hard to believe that such a caring, kind woman could have actually committed the murder of a patient that she is incarcerated for。The A seriously dark tale which is strangely compelling and definitely unsettling。 Rose is working as a nurse but had previously been studying to be a doctor and she had been passionate about becoming a paediatric doctor。 Her dreams were seemingly derailed by a passionate love affair and becoming pregnant by the enigmatic Daniel。 Rose is now in prison but it is really hard to believe that such a caring, kind woman could have actually committed the murder of a patient that she is incarcerated for。The themes of this book are shocking and the sense of danger and evil lurking are cleverly built up to the point that you do not know who to trust。 I liked the characterisations and also that various parts of the story were based in Nottingham, my original home town。 I’m left with an overwhelming sense of sadness but did enjoy the ending。 Thank you。 。。。more

Wow what a book! Firstly, I connected instantly with the main characters, Theo and Rose。 Also, it takes a really special writer to somehow garner sympathy for a character who has pleaded guilty to an awful murder。 Others however, including Theo, think there might be more to the story。This is a great thriller, sharp and pacy。 It unfolds oh-so-cleverly。 One of those rare books that I tried to read slowly because I didn’t want it to end, but raced through nonetheless。 Several ’gasp out loud’ moment Wow what a book! A really good story! The Nurse is the story of a nurse who ends up in prison after admitting to killing a man under her care。 I really enjoyed reading this, it is well paced, has well rounded characters (on the whole) and has a very good way of revealing just enough information to keep you guessing。 I felt that I could have learned more about Miles and he was just a little too far away to really understand his character。 But I loved Rose and Daniel, the main characters。 There was just enough ima A really good story! 3。5 starsPart way in and I thought this was fairly decent。Three quarters of the way in,and I had a fairly good idea where it was going。But I did not see all the twists that would get me there,or the fact that I was really rooting for these two main characters, that despite everything came across as so likeable。A dark and twisty tale that flew by as I raced through the pages。A very good read。

Rose Marlowe is a nurse and a loving wife。 But she is currently incarcerated for murder。 Writer Theo Hazel visits her as he wants to write a book about her case。 When she talks abut her life and what has happened, Theo thinks something is not exactly right and thinks that Rose might be innocent of her crime。The story goes back to when Rose was a med student and waitressing in her spare time where she meets Dean quite older than herself。 They form a relationship and the story tell us of the event Rose Marlowe is a nurse and a loving wife。 But she is currently incarcerated for murder。 Writer Theo Hazel visits her as he wants to write a book about her case。 When she talks abut her life and what has happened, Theo thinks something is not exactly right and thinks that Rose might be innocent of her crime。The story goes back to when Rose was a med student and waitressing in her spare time where she meets Dean quite older than herself。 They form a relationship and the story tell us of the events that lead up to that fatal day。Thank you, Canelo, for a copy of the Nurse。 I liked the premise of this storyline and the characters were well developed but for me unlikeable。 I found this story quite slow burning, but I also felt that although this was a good story, there was no bite in the story。 It lacked oomph。 3 stars from me。 。。。more

Rose Marlowe is serving a prison sentence for murder, a young man she should have been nursing back to health, but killed in cold blood instead。 Or did she? Theo Hazel is a writer who wants to explore the story of both Rose and Abe, the man she killed。 But the more Rose reveals of her past, the more Theo is drawn to her, and the more he starts to think that she might be innocent after all。 Is Theo about to fall for the lies of a manipulative and calculating killer? Definitely more of a slow burn, but I really enjoyed this。 I liked the way the story played out and the way the relationships developed as it unfolded。 I genuinely wasn’t sure how this would end and didn’t have a solid theory until I was about 70% through。Really liked Theo’s character and his involvement, the way the two timelines were incorporated, and the different perspectives。 To be honest I wasn’t huge on the very very end but it was another little twist! *ARC received via netgalley*
